An Appeal by Hon’ble Chief Minister on the launch of Sikkim Organic Mission
My dear fellow citizens,
As you are aware that Sikkim though a late entrant in the Indian Union has played a pioneer role in many development aspects of the country. When organic farming was in its nascent stage in India, leadership in the Sikkim not only propagated the importance of organic farming but also implemented with full fervour. In the beginning of the first decade of 21st Century only, a movement was launched in Sikkim to promote organic farming. It was not a difficult task for the small Himalayan state like ours to adopt organic farming practices where traditionally farmers have been using environment friendly technologies and had hardly used chemical fertilizers. Significant progress was made by Sikkim in the last decade in the organic movement when my Government explicitly discouraged use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides.
However, there are many hindrances in making Sikkim a complete organic state due to the fact that there was a lack of trained manpower in the State. Sikkim due to the presence of different climatic zones required area-specific technologies. There was a need for a strategy for Sikkim to make it complete organic without compromising on the productivity. Hence, my Government has launched a Mission called “Sikkim Organic Mission 2015” with a clear objective to make the entire Sikkim an organic state by the year 2015. I am fully assured that though it is an ambitious task but with the cooperation of all Sikkim people we will be able to achieve this in an effective, time-bound and credible manner. When I give call to all my fellow citizens to participate in this organic movement, it is necessary for all of us to understand the meaning of organic farming and what are its basics.
